🌱 Discovery

The problem

Creating and delivering value to customers is challenging. 9 out of 10 startups fail, primarily due to a lack of product-market fit and marketing issues. Moreover, 45% of companies lack a clear marketing strategy, as developing a smart advertising plan is both expensive and complex.

Solution

The founders have been gathering experience in every niche of digital marketing - from strategy and communication through graphics, web development, media buying, performance, and analytics. From the perspective of advertising specialists working at agencies, they have been observing a marketing rollercoaster: the lack of standards, the hegemony of huge advertising agencies, and the absurdly inflated Martech market, making entrepreneurs dizzy.

They took up the challenge of creating a platform that would gather all their experienced insights and encourage other growth hackers to share their tactics. As a result, a revolutionary tool began development to solve any marketing problem and help users execute strategies automatically without external tools.

Growth Stage

I joined the team after DigitalFirst had already been released under 1.0 version, acquiring around 3,000 created accounts with more than half being active users. The platform serves two nearly equal user groups: 53% create marketing strategies for companies, while 47% develop strategies for individual clients. Surveys revealed that the most important functionality is to create marketing strategies more effectively. The user profiles are mainly business owners and marketing specialists. Social media serves as the key channel for product awareness, thanks to the systematic activity of one of the founders.

By analyzing quantitative data and gathering qualitative insights through conversations with Growth Hackers (another user profile), I formed a personal opinion about the product which helped me recommend next steps during UX sessions.

When I gained access to the DF app, I noticed many inconsistencies in the UI. I needed to investigate the factors that led to this problem. Upon inspecting the design files, which formed the basis of my work, I discovered an unfamiliar design system used in Figma. The TaigaUI framework (version 2) had been initially implemented, which was itself confusing to use in product development. I recommended considering more common frameworks like AntDesign or TailwindUI, but this was quite challenging at that moment.

✨ Ideation and Execution

During the rapidly growing market of AI tools, DigitalFirst's scope of growth was constantly evolving. A tool for creating marketing strategies needed to integrate with most of the trending solutions used for communication, content creation, web development, analytics, and more. In improving DF, we didn't follow a long linear roadmap to deliver what we had planned months earlier. For instance, the release of the ChatGPT-4 model in March 2023 immediately forced us to integrate with it. Our priorities shifted to position ourselves as one of the first in the market using the latest GPT version, and brought us more ideas on how existing features could evolve.

This led to systematic planning sessions and extensive brainstorming meetings. A community of Growth Hackers actively using DigitalFirst also provided us with valuable qualitative insights. As a result, we produced numerous flows, benchmarks, sketches, and wireframes, which we iteratively analyzed until we had a complete concept ready for design or implementation. For workflow management, we primarily used Notion and Clickup.

Future plans

We often referred to the second release in our discussions. Ideas postponed for valid reasons or decisions were gathered in a backlog for implementation in the improved version DF 2.0.

One of the references we used to visualize DigitalFirst's intended direction were apps like Notion and Obsidian, where users just start typing. Our vision is to create a sandbox AI tool that uses the "second brain" method, where a non-linear structure allows users to work on strategies dynamically while keeping every asset connected.
